What is forensic psychology?and its role

 

Hi everyone my name is Saira and today i'm talking about What is Forensic Psychology and its work?

Forensic psychology is a field that is a mixture of the practice of psychology and the law. Those who work in this field utilize psychological expertise as it works on the application of the justice system. The term ‘forensic’ is derived from the Latin word ‘forensic,’ which means “the forum,” or the court system.The Forensic psychologists usually work in civil and criminal cases where they help in evaluating individuals to determine questions such as competency to stand trial, connections of a mental disorder to an accident or crime, and risky behavior. 

The American Board of Forensic Psychology describes this field as the application of psychology to those issues which involve the law and legal system. 

History of Forensic Psychology

 Forensic psychology is a generally considered a new area within psychology, this field dates to the earliest days in the history of psychology. Philosophers, scientists,  have long sought to understand what makes humans commit crimes, behave aggressively, or engage in antisocial activities. In 2001,the American Psychological Association has officially recognized the forensic psychology as a specialty area. The field of forensic psychology has rooted that date back to the first psychology lab of Wilhelm Wundt’s which was built in Leipzig, German. Forensic psychologists are not only interested in understanding the reason behind the occurrence of such behaviors, but also in helping minimize and prevent such actions and activities.Forensic psychologists do play an important role in the criminal justice system. 

Work of Forensic Psychologists

The most common work of forensic psychologist  regarding this field  that they spout expert analysis from the witness stand or convince criminals to admit their guilt. 

 Job Roles

The roles which are typically performed in a forensic psychologist include competency evaluations, sentencing recommendations, evaluations of the danger of re offending, testimony as a witness, child custody evaluations, consult with law enforcement, treatment of criminal offenders, providing psychological services to inmates and offenders, trial consultants who help with jury selection, witnessing preparation, or legal strategies and design correctional programs. Forensic psychologists can perform various roles .

 Features of Forensic Psychology

The duties of a forensic psychologist as they are clearly limited in terms of scope and duration. A forensic psychologist might be asked to perform a very keen specific duty in each cases, like determining whether the suspect is mentally competent to face charges or not.A forensic psychologist usually deals with those individuals who are not there of their own free will. It can make assessment, diagnosis, and treatment much more difficult because few individuals willfully resist the attempts at help.

Education and Training

 Forensic psychology is not a common degree  but  many institutions are offering it as a specialty.If  you want to become a forensic psychologist you should choose courses that focus on topics such as criminal psychology, social behaviors, abnormal behaviors, cognitive psychology, perception, drugs and psychopharmacology, law, and criminal justice. 

Choosing forensic psychology as career option . To pursue a career in this field you should develop some of your skills such as ability to communicate well, critical thinking and solving research problems.
