The first step as you're looking at your Gmail inbox 

is to click the profile icon at the top right of the screen and select Manage Your Google Account. Once that window has popped open, click Data and Personalization on the top menu.

After clicking, scroll down until you see 

Download or delete your data section and click Delete a Service. Now tap, Delete a service. Then, you will need to enter your account password for verification. This will open a window with a Download Data prompt, which gives you the opportunity to copy all of your messages, attachments, and user settings before deleting.

If you've already done so 

or don't have an interest in preserving this history, click the trash can icon next to your Gmail account. There you have it. You've officially deleted your Gmail for good.

In order to continue using other Google services associated 

with your Google account, you'll need another address to sign in with. That's why you'll be prompted to enter a third party email and send a verification email to that address. Once sent, sign-in to your third party email, open the verification message you've just sent yourself, and click Delete Gmail at the very bottom of the message body. And poof, your Gmail account has left the present and is now a part of digital history.

How to Delete Gmail on Android  

largely the same. Begin by opening your Gmail app, click your picture in the upper right corner. Now tap Manage your Google account. Tap Data and personalization. Now click Delete a service or your account Once you select the trash can icon, follow the on-screen instructions, 

which are identical to the desktop instructions. If you are using an Android device to delete your account the steps are under the Download, delete or make a plan for your data section, tap Delete a service under the Delete a Google service section. Now, enter your password, there you can download data and delete your YouTube, Gmail, Google One or other Google Services.

How to Delete Gmail on iPhone  

 If you are using the iPhone to delete your Gmail account the steps are very similar. 

Instead of opening your phone settings, you'll need to have the Gmail app itself open.

Select the hamburger menu icon 

at the top left of the screen, scroll down and select Settings, and tap the email account you'd like to delete. From there, much like the previous instructions, you'll choose Manage Your Google Account, followed by Data and Personalization, then Delete a Service or your Account, and finally, Delete a Service.

Now, you'll need to enter your password for confirmation. 

You'll have the same option here to download your email data just as you do on desktop. Or, to go ahead and delete, select the trash icon next to the Gmail section.

 Follow the same instructions mentioned previously, 

depending on your device of choice, until you reach the Delete a Service or Your Account page. Instead of selecting your Gmail account, click Delete Your Google Account and provide your password. You'll have the opportunity to download your data before the deletion is final, take a breath, then tick both boxes and click Delete Account.

How to recover a deleted Google or Gmail account?

 Now it is possible through not guaranteed that you'll be able to recover 

both your deleted Gmail account or Google account if you change your mind, though the more time that passes, the less likely a recovery is.

To try, go to the Google Account recovery page 

and enter your email. If it recognizes your email, you have a successful security check and allows you to enter your password, your account lives on!

If recovering your Gmail account, 

go to the Google recovery page and enter the email address that you want to recover, and click next. This is the moment of truth. If you get the message such account does not exist, it's lost, or if you get to enter the most recent password of your account, you're lucky!

Now, with the right password, 

you will get a success message, and continue to your Google Account. Now click Google Apps and select Gmail. Once you have, you'll be prompted to add your phone number for verification and Submit. After receiving your code via SMS or phone call, enter it and submit to get your Gmail back!
